What is AI brain fry?
AI brain fry is cognitive fatigue associated with heavy use or oversight of AI tools beyond a person's cognitive capacity. The term was coined in a March 2026 BCG study published in Harvard Business Review, which surveyed 1,488 workers and found that 14% experienced symptoms including mental fog, slower decision-making, and 39% more major errors.
Unlike general burnout, AI brain fry is specific to AI tool interaction. It appears tied to the cognitive demands of supervising AI outputs, context-switching between AI tools, and verifying AI-generated content. The BCG study reported that productivity gains tended to peak around 2 AI tools, with diminishing returns beyond 3.
